Although Gounod’s Faust was not an immediate success when it premiered in Paris in 1859, it went on to become one of the most popular operas of the 20th century.
Other operatic adaptations of the Faust tale include Hector Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust (1846), Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele (1868), and Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress (1951).
